Not all SPF 50+ is the same. Sunscreen falls into two broad categories — mineral and chemical — and the difference isn't marketing, it's chemistry.
How Chemical Sunscreens Work
Chemical filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, and similar ingredients) absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. They tend to feel lighter and blend in invisibly, which is why they're common in everyday facial sunscreens. The tradeoff: several of these filters have been linked to coral bleaching, and some regions — including parts of Mexico, Hawaii, and Palau — have restricted or banned them for reef protection.
How Mineral Sunscreens Work
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin and physically reflect and scatter UV rays rather than absorbing them. This is what's known as broad-spectrum protection — it blocks UVA and UVB without a chemical reaction on the skin. Non-nano zinc oxide (particles large enough that they don't absorb into the skin or, once rinsed off, into coral reefs) is generally considered the most reef-safe option available.
Why It Matters for Sensitive Skin
Because mineral filters sit on top of the skin instead of being absorbed, they're generally better tolerated by sensitive or reactive skin, and they start working the moment they're applied — no 20-minute wait like some chemical formulas require.
